Synopsis

In The House by the River, the tranquil life of renowned poet Stephen Burns is shattered by a chilling event that unfolds one fateful evening. Set against the serene backdrop of the Thames, Stephen lives a comfortable life with his wife Marjorie and his brother John. However, the peace is disrupted when Marjorie leaves for a visit to her family in Cornwall, leaving Stephen alone with their new maid, Emily Gaunt. As dusk falls on June 15th, Stephen finds himself in a seemingly innocuous conversation with Emily, which quickly escalates into a moment of panic and violence. In a misguided attempt to kiss her, he frightens her, leading to a tragic accident where she bumps her head and falls unconscious.
