The atmosphere is charged with anticipation as his family and staff await his arrival. Jefferson's daughter, Patsy, is particularly concerned about a smallpox outbreak reported in Philadelphia, which has affected their friends, Jenny and Harriet Somerset. This concern leads to a discussion about the severity of smallpox and the potential for vaccination, a topic that weighs heavily on Jefferson's mind.
