In The Cheat, we meet James Matthews, a man who feels trapped in his mundane life in Mexico City, where he has spent five months with his wife, Rose. James's perception of Mexico as a romantic paradise is shattered by the reality of his unfulfilling marriage. He views Rose as a mere meal ticket, a foolish woman whose presence only serves to irritate him. As he sits in their apartment, he reflects on how little he knows of the city beyond his office and their home. His focus is solely on a lucrative business deal with Mallard Gunther, a mining mogul, which he believes will provide him the independence he craves.
