In The Anniversary Gift, private detective Philip Marlowe receives a call from Stanley Turner, who is grieving the recent loss of his wife, Margaret. Stanley explains that he is desperate to recover a precious wristwatch he gave her on their anniversary, which went missing the day she died. The watch, a Benorus Platinum set with emeralds, is not just valuable in monetary terms but holds deep sentimental significance for Stanley. He believes it is lost somewhere in Camino Beach, where he last had it before her tragic death.
