Synopsis

In The Fatted Calf, Philip Marlowe finds himself caught in a torrential downpour, both literally and metaphorically, as he receives a mysterious letter containing a hundred-dollar bill. The letter leads him to the studio of Junius Poppy, a veteran cartoonist who is concerned about his assistant, Sid Cagan, and Cagan's wife, Louise. Poppy's gruff demeanor and obsessive dedication to his work set the stage for a tense investigation that Marlowe is reluctantly drawn into.
