Synopsis

In The Indian Giver, private detective Philip Marlowe receives a call from Alex Van Nord, a curio dealer in downtown Los Angeles. Van Nord is anxious about a shipment of Indian artifacts that included an unexpected piece of pottery, which he suspects holds significant value. He describes how the bowl was not listed on the invoice and how two visitors—a frail archaeologist and a beautiful woman named Mona Waters—showed keen interest in it. The intrigue deepens when Van Nord discovers the bowl has been stolen, prompting him to seek Marlowe's help in recovering it without involving the police.
