In The Big Complex, Detectives Joe Friday and Frank Smith are called to investigate a troubling series of vandalism incidents at Hillside Junior High School. Over the past six weeks, the school has suffered multiple break-ins, with the cafeteria being the primary target of destruction. The detectives arrive on a cold morning to meet with Vice Principal Miss Ridley, who explains the extent of the damage and the stolen items, which include school supplies and food. As they examine the scene, it becomes clear that the vandalism is not just random mischief but a cry for help from troubled students.
