Synopsis

In I, Mary Peabody, we are introduced to Mary Peabody, who feels overshadowed by her two sisters, Sophia and Elizabeth. Set in 1833 Boston, Mary struggles with her painful shyness, which sets her apart from her more charismatic siblings. While Sophia is delicate and poetic, and Elizabeth is energetic and intelligent, Mary feels plain and unremarkable. The story begins in the boarding house of Mrs. Clark, where Mary is determined to overcome her insecurities, particularly when it comes to meeting new people.
