Synopsis

In Break the News, part of the Cavalcade of America series, we are transported to 1848, a pivotal year in American journalism. Young Thomas Riggs works at the New York Herald, where he learns that despite having the largest circulation in the city, the paper is on the brink of bankruptcy due to high operational costs. His boss, Mr. Bennett, reveals the harsh reality of the newspaper business, emphasizing that to survive, they must find a way to pool resources with their competitors. This sets the stage for a revolutionary idea in news reporting.
