Synopsis

The General Wore Calico presents the inspiring tale of Mary Bickerdike, a woman who became a pivotal figure in the Civil War by leading efforts to support wounded soldiers. As the episode opens, it is spring 1865, shortly after the war's conclusion. Mrs. Bickerdike finds herself in the War Department, waiting to meet General Ulysses S. Grant, who has called her in to discuss her significant contributions to the Sanitary Commission.
