The Heart and the Fountain introduces us to Margaret Fuller, a remarkable figure in American journalism, as she grapples with her aspirations amidst the societal limitations of the 19th century. The narrative begins in Groton, Massachusetts, where Margaret, played by Madeleine Carroll, is bedridden with fever, haunted by dreams of death and a longing for freedom. She expresses her desire to break free from traditional roles and pursue her passion for writing, despite the doctor’s insistence that she will find happiness through marriage and motherhood.
