Synopsis

In the Cavalcade of America episode Down to the Sea, set in 1841, we meet Herman Melville as he prepares to embark on a whaling voyage from New Bedford, Massachusetts. The bustling wharf is alive with the sounds of sailors and the scent of the ocean, but Melville's excitement is tempered by the reality of whaling life. He is accompanied by a matron and her daughter, who express their concerns about the dangers that lie ahead. Despite their apprehensions, Melville is determined to see the world and experience the life of a sailor.
