Synopsis

In this episode of Cavalcade of America, we delve into the life of Samuel Slater, often hailed as the father of American manufacturers. Born in 1768 in Belper, Derbyshire, England, Slater shows an early fascination with machinery, particularly the cotton mills where he apprentices. As he learns the intricacies of textile production, he becomes increasingly aware of the limitations imposed by English law, which forbids skilled workers from leaving the country or taking their knowledge abroad.
