Synopsis
In The Humanitarian Urge, set in 1874 New York City, the episode opens with Mrs. Etta Wheeler, a compassionate voluntary missionary, who becomes deeply troubled by the cries of a child suffering next door. The societal norms of the time allow for a shocking lack of intervention in cases of child abuse, and Mrs. Wheeler's heart aches for the innocent victim. She is determined to take action, despite the overwhelming obstacles presented by the law and societal indifference.
